Advanced Elective: American Culture

If you're interested in American culture, you'll enjoy the American Culture elective class. The possible content of American Culture is as widely diverse as the actual culture of the U.S.A. One class session can focus on American history, holidays, and traditions; another on idioms and accents used in today's TV shows.

Our great city of New York is also often explored in this elective; our complex urban culture, found in our restaurants, museums, neighborhoods, and people, becomes the content of this fascinating class.

Advanced Elective: Current Events

Current Events is one of our most popular but challenging electives. Being able to read The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other newspapers and magazines requires a high-level of skill. Due to the variety of news sources, students are exposed to both college-level vocabulary and everyday American idioms.

Advanced Elective: ETF (English through Film)

English through Film (or ETF) is not just a video class. The speech in the film is used as a chance to explore advanced grammar structures and idiomatic vocabulary and improve pronunciation. The movies, usually the greatest Hollywood classics, are also a springboard for discussion about American culture and history. The class is also an opportunity to strengthen speaking skills as students are asked to summarize the scenes they've viewed in class.

Advanced Elective: Fluency

Speaking well requires many skills. Students can take the Fluency elective several times without running out of something new to learn. The emphasis of the fluency course always changes from session to session: Sometimes debate is stressed, other times the focus is on pronunciation. Techniques derived from acting or public speaking are sometimes used. However, whatever the content, the fundamental emphasis is on improving the student's speaking abilities.

Advanced Elective: Reading, Writing, and Discussion

The ultimate goal of this elective is to be able to understand and explain ideas in both spoken and written forms. The class reads texts on a variety of interesting topics and students are expected summarize and analyze them. Because the texts are challenging, the discussions require the use of advanced vocabulary.
